Below are salient point of teachings from the Bible you will hear in classes and from the pulpit in the SJC congregation.
* God inspired the writing and preservation of the Bible and gave the New Testament as the pattern for the church's worship and work. He has established no authority outside the Bible for any doctrine or pratice of Christians.
* God in his grace saves when people are obedient to his word and show that obedience by faith, repentance, confession and immersion in water for the forgiveness of sins.
* Christ has but one body, the church, which is not the sum of the divided denominations, but the family of God which obeys him in all things. He makes that body visible and identifiable by its biblical and spiritual characteristics.
* God is the only Judge, righteous and just, and has revealed to us the basis by which he will judge the world in the last day. We must proclaim that judgment as a part of the gospel.
* God has specifed that singing, without the use of mechanical instruments, is his will for the church's worship.
* We do not belong to the progressive movement, nor do we adhere to anti-institutional tenets.

To attempt a description of the Brazil churches of Christ can be a dangerous task due to the size of the country and the lack of accurate data. Here are a few brushstrokes to paint a general picture.
We ask that the text here not be copied elsewhere on the Internet, since we hope to update it soon, and periodically. Please just provide a web link to this http://churchofchrist.randal.fastmail.fm/#Brazil on your website or ezine. As it grows, we'll divde it into parts also.
!!Churches
[>img[São Bernardo church building in Campinas, São Paulo state: Christians meet here|campinaspredio.jpg]]Congregations are often known as the church of Christ (//igreja de Cristo//) or merely as Christians (see photo, mouseover). Quite a few have their own buildings, but probably the majority meet in public schools, rented facilities and private homes.
Brethren in Brazil have a high sense of brotherhood across the country. Regional and national gatherings, such as the Northeastern Christian Lectureship and the National Christian Workers Encounter, are well attended.
Meetings show more emotional fervor than American churches and typically last longer, especially in the Northeast. Short meditations of 10-15 minutes, based on Scripture, during the Lord's supper and the offering are typical.
Dozens of churches are now shepherded by elders, though one might conclude this sign of maturity has been slow in coming.
!!Statistics
No church growth research has been done in Brazil in the last 10 years, so no one has any idea how many churches or Christians there are. A wild guess is that there are over 200 congregations. Churches are more concentrated in the Northeast and Southeast, especially São Paulo state. A strong house-church movement, begun by Bryan and Jacqueline Bost, seems to be occurring in the city of São Paulo.
In the early years, Allen Dutton Sr., collected statistics on the churches. Reach Project published three lists of churches and church workers in the 90s.
Michael Pruitt and Alcides Marques have gathered information on churches in the Northeast. F.H. Gates in Belo Horizonte has collected church addresses for contact through his television program, though the list includes progressive churches.
!!Training
A Bible institute founded by the original 1961 mission team in São Paulo during the 1970s provided the first organized efforts at training preachers, evangelists and elders.
Today, several American-led or funded formal training programs operate in Belo Horizonte (http://eddisonfowler.com/), Campo Grande (http://alvarocpestana.googlepages.com), Curitiba and Recife (http://www.cafes.net/winchurch/mission_fields.htm#Brazil%20Mission%20Field). These programs draw students from across the country. Other training is done within congregations or offered in city-wide or regional efforts.
In Campinas, São Paulo state, Allen Dutton Sr. began, and Allen Jr. continues the Intensive Studies, a week-long annual program of studies, for preachers and evangelists. Held after the Easter weekend, when brethren come from around the country for the National Christian Workers Encounter, dozens of men and women stay for the Intensive Studies. Teachers are usually a mix of brethren invited from the U.S., American missionaries and Brazilian teachers.
A notable example was the Nucleus of Advanced Studies (//http://www.cet.org.br/nea///), based in São Paulo and directed by Sidney Leite, before his move to the U.S., in 2007.
In Nov. 2008, we began a http://randalmatheny.com/2008/11/28/advanced-study-series-begins-successfully/ which promises to draw from churches within our region and beyond, since there are presently no formal ongoing programs in the state of São Paulo. The program meets the second Saturday afternoon of each month and will have principally Brazilian teachers from the state and perhaps beyond.
!!Evangelism
Much evangelism in the church in Brazil is done through a variation of the storefront approach, in the School of the Bible (//Escola da Bíblia//). Radio has been widely used, and some television programs have provided sporadic efforts as well. The Internet has been harnessed in recent years. Publications such as Bible correspondence courses continue to be used.
Evangelistic campaigns with American college students has long been a staple of outreach efforts. Other groups, such as Let's Start Talking, have also been active.
!!Missions
In the early years, the Brazil Breakthrough recruiting effort brought a number of mission teams to the country in the 80s and 90s. With an expanded role as Continent of Great Cities, the ministry has taken a definite turn to the progressive side and recruited teams which clash doctrinally with previous efforts.
Since the need for missionary personnel continues to be great, brethren should consider a means of recruiting new teams and workers that will adhere to biblical authority and preach the gospel brought by the first missionaries in Brazil
!!Benevolence
Alma and Arlie Smith established an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, I believe. It moved to São Paulo state in the 90s and is associated with Southern Christian Homes in Morrilton, Ark. Orphanages are being established in Belo Horizonte and Recife, the latter slated for operation in 2009. A child-care program was established by the Belo Jardim church in Pernambuco, but we have no recent news of their efforts.
!!Youth
Local congregations often have strong programs for young people. The Christian camps in Embu Guaçu, outside of São Paulo, and near Belo Horizonte, conduct numerous sessions for youth by age.
The Christian camp in Olinda, Pernambuco, near Recife, is now defunct and the grounds will become the future children's home.
!!Literature
A strong emphasis in published materials has blessed the Brazilian church since its beginning. Though resources are still limited, such efforts as Eddie Cloer's Truth for Today ministry do provide some materials to churches. Other materials are produced in Brazil such as the Reach Project (//http://alcanceweb.com///) and Christian Life Publisher (//http://www.vidacrista.com.br//).
Two magazines serve the national church: Christian Woman (//Mulher Cristã//) and Edification (//Edificação//), a general Christian periodical similar to the Gospel Advocate.
!!Doctrine
Twenty years ago missionary Allen Dutton Sr., observed with gratitude that the churches of Christ in Brazil enjoyed great unity. Since then, however, the churches have been disturbed by the International Church of Christ and the anti-institutional movement. More recently, progressive elements, especially those supported from the U.S., have made heavy inroads and teach their doctrines widely in the churches. Influence from evangelical churches sometimes blurs the distinctive plea among brethren.
!!Prospects
The Brazilian church will have to deal in the future with doctrinal challenges from both right and left. As it assumes greater responsibility for outreach and training, it will have to discover how to conduct its efforts without the heavy investment of American funds that have been both a blessing and a curse.
Churches are burdened with heavy bureaucratic tasks, especially those which establish a legal presence in their communities. The house church movement avoids those distractions, allowing Christians to focus on evangelism, edification and benevolence and to devote their full financial capacity directly in these areas. It remains to be seen, however, how well these will cultivate a spirit of national brotherhood and integrate with other congregations.
Brazilians are deeply spiritual, creative within their enviroment, concerned for their countrymen, and passionate about the gospel. The blessings of God promise to make this country rich soil for a bountiful harvest, and we pray that harvest may manifest itself soon to reach the millions of people who await the light of salvation in Jesus Christ.

The SJC church was begun in Oct., 1988, as an outreach of the State Missions Plan of the Ninth of July church in São Paulo. Two families were sent to SJC, one supported in full-time ministry, the other working in local industries. They focused on personal evangelism and, later, an outreach called School of the Bible.
The congregation today has no full-time preacher or evangelist, nor does it own a building. It has met in rented facilities, such as hotel conference rooms or commercial space.
About 20 disciples meet in SJC, and the attendance averages around 25. They live scattered around the city, and several live in other cities such as Jacareí and São Paulo.
The http://randalmatheny.com/ works with the SJC church, but Randal is not full-time with the congregation. He works in publications, teaches seminars across Brazil and is involved in ministries such as Christian youth camp and the children's home. He was instrumental in the establishing the http://voodafe.wordpress.com/category/taubate/, with which he also works.

Why English
The city of SJC is located on the Rodovia (Highway) Via Dutra, which connects the state capitals of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. It is about a 50-minute drive from the International Airport in Guarulhos. It is 90 km from São Paulo.
[>img[distancias.gif]]With a population of 610,000, it is the aeronautics and space center for the country, as well as a major industrial center, with factories and businesses like General Motors and Johnson & Johnson. One of Petrobrás's largest oil refineries is also located here.
The city has four malls (called "shopping" in Portuguese): Center Vale, Colinas, Shopping São José, Vale Sul. The first and last of these are located along the Via Dutra highway. Colinas is about five minutes from the Dutra, while Shopping São José, the smallest, is located downtown.
Several of the malls have well-known eating establishments like the ubiquotous ~McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Subway. We recommend the local cuisine, however. Vegetarians will enjoy the Con-sciência and Lotus restaurants.
Local weather can be followed at http://www.weathercity.com/br/sp/sao_jose_dos_campos/. The ~WikiPedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Jos%C3%A9_dos_Campos on the city is fairly up to date.

|Description|Show tiddlers one at a time with automatic permalink, or always open tiddlers at top/bottom of page.|
This plugin allows you to configure TiddlyWiki to navigate more like a traditional multipage web site with only one tiddler displayed at a time.
!!!!!Documentation
>see SinglePageModePluginInfo
!!!!!Configuration
<<<
<<option chkSinglePageMode>> Display one tiddler at a time
><<option chkSinglePagePermalink>> Automatically permalink current tiddler
><<option chkSinglePageKeepFoldedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are folded
><<option chkSinglePageKeepEditedTiddlers>> Don't close tiddlers that are being edited
<<option chkTopOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the top of the page
<<option chkBottomOfPageMode>> Open tiddlers at the bottom of the page
<<option chkSinglePageAutoScroll>> Automatically scroll tiddler into view (if needed)
Notes:
* The "display one tiddler at a time" option can also be //temporarily// set/reset by including a 'paramifier' in the document URL: {} or {}.
* If more than one display mode is selected, 'one at a time' display takes precedence over both 'top' and 'bottom' settings, and if 'one at a time' setting is not used, 'top of page' takes precedence over 'bottom of page'.
* When using Apple's Safari browser, automatically setting the permalink causes an error and is disabled.

Below are some pratical tips and ideas to help you feel more comfortable among us.
* We do not wear suits and ties at any of our meetings. Many of the ladies wear slacks, some of the men, jeans. Others wear dress clothes. No one is discriminated against because of attire. It is not an issue (as long as it is decent).
* Visitors are not expected to place anything in the offering. We do hope you'll maintain your contribution at your home congregation.
* We try to begin on time. On Sundays, we are almost always finished before 12 noon. Visiting afterwards with one another can extend for 30 minutes or more.
* The sermon does not include a hymn of invitation. We prefer to teach individually so that people may come to a personal decision not swayed by the emotion of the moment.
* You may recognize some songs translated from English; others are original Brazilian compositions.
* If you hold some type of racial prejudice, you will not be comfortable in our midst.
* The Sunday meeting follows this order: Bible study, interval, songs and prayers, Bible reading, sermon, Lord's supper, offering, closing with short reading and prayer, announcements.

We also have a bit of information about the city of SJC, abbreviated SJC.
In 2008 Ron Jackson, from Florida, looked for the church in SJCampos and found us only after repeated attempts. That we were in three different locations that year made it especially difficult. His persistence paid off, but not everyone will have multiple opportunities as he did, nor will many have his patience. It was his experience that prompted this small website.
We receive visitors on business from many places, especially from the U.S., considering the multinational corporations located here.
This website is to help those visitors find the church in SJC.
